Matcha Latte Recipe

this is the iced matcha latte I drink everyday to fuel my workouts, support my brain/liver/joints, and keep my skin healthy. the matcha quality and type of milk makes a huge difference - select the right one for your body and you’ll understand why so many call matcha the “magical” elixir.

why I drink matcha everyday

I’ve been needing and wanting something more energizing and hydrating than plain water to start the day and serve as a pre-workout, and I love the taste of matcha. matcha lattes are my go-to when I see it at a cafe serving dairy-free milk, but it wasn’t until my friend gifted me a whisk and my sister gifted me a bag of delicious matcha powder that I decided to perfect my craft at it! maybe it’s because I have PCOS and am sensitive to coffee/caffeine, but my stomach does not sit well with just any matcha powder - some make me feel sick and others make me very jittery. I’m excited to have finally found 3 brands (linked below) that I rotate between based on what I’m trying to achieve.

how to make iced MATCHA LATTE

step 1: make a matcha paste

*if you do not own a whisk/are not ready to make the investment, see below for my dissolvable matcha crystal recommendation.

  • add 1 tsp of matcha powder into a bowl with a flat wide base

  • pour 1/4 c of hot water (enough to submerge the matcha to make a paste!)

  • whisk the matcha using a vigorous whisking motion + draw an M-shape into the bottom of the bowl until matcha is completely dissolved. you should see a lot of bubbles. the more bubbles the better!

  • set the paste to the side

step 2: prep your matcha cup

  • add to your glass cup about a cup of ice

  • add approx. 1/2-3/4 a cup of your milk of choice - don’t cover the ice all the way

I love mine with coconut milk!
I do not recommend cow’s milk for matcha lattes - while I love me some raw milk, the beneficial, cancer/tumor fighting antioxidants of matcha are nullified by the protein in cow’s milk.

step 3: create that magical matcha latte swirl

  • pour your matcha paste over your cup of iced milk.

  • swirl and enjoy!

Matcha Brands I recommend

*pique - Sun Goddess Matcha

perfect for those without a whisk!

why I love it: these 100% organic matcha crystals dissolve super fast and make a smooth creamy cup of tea. plus, they’re quadruple toxin screened and you can absolutely taste the purity. as someone with PCOS, I’m super sensitive to caffeine, but this one gives me no jitters.
*this discount link gets you 15% off + free shipping on their Radiant Skin Duo which includes the Matcha + electrolytes!

teaxactly - organic matcha 80% less caffeine

why I recommend it: it’s great for those conscientious of their caffeine intake. whether your pregnant, postpartum, someone sensitive to caffeine, or someone with a child who always wants to drink your matcha with you (it me!) this one’s a winner. it’s quality you can taste, organic, ceremonial grade, and has 80% less caffeine.

nodoka - premium matcha powder

why I use it: I was pleasantly surprised by this authentic organic matcha powder after several disappointing matcha experiences. it does not disappoint the matcha snob I became after my honeymoon in japan + korea! it’s full strength caffeine for those who want the full punch.

Matcha Latte Ingredients

1 tsp matcha powder or single serving of Pique Sun Goddess Matcha
1/4 c hot water
1/2-3/4 c milk of choice* (dilute based on how strong you like your matcha flavor)
1/2 - 1 c ice

Optional boosters:
1/2 scoop collagen (for joint support)
1 tsp MCT oil (for a quick boost of energy - amazing for the liver and the brain)

Detailed Instructions:

1) MAKE THE MATCHA CONCENTRATE: boil your water, add the matcha powder to your wide based bowl, pour the hot water into the bowl and whisk the matcha vigorously until bubbles form and matcha is fully dissolved.

2) PREP A GLASS CUP: prep your matcha cup with a generous splash of milk (this is when you add in your optional collagen/MCT and mix it until the collagen is dissolved), add your ice and pour in the rest of your milk.

3) MAGICAL MATCHA LATTE SWIRL TIME: pour your matcha concentrate over your cup of ice + milk. swirl & enjoy!

Equipment: water boiler, matcha whisk (optional if using pique tea), bowl with wide bottom, glass cup, teaspoon
Serves: 1

Matcha tips you need to know

  • Store your matcha powder air tight in the freezer to keep it fresh between uses

  • When having matcha lattes go for non-cow’s milk options to reap the full health benefits of matcha

  • Hojicha, like matcha, is ground up green tea, but it’s derived from more mature leaves than the ones matcha is derived from. It’s got less caffeine, it’s brown, and has an earthy DELICIOUS flavor.

The best matcha treat I’ve ever had

  • In Korea… Pan Honesta - I got every matcha item they had. It was AMAZING

  • A close second was in Hawaii:
